Fishers of Men

This weekend’s readings are filled with inspiration and instruction, and offers us great words of encouragement! Isaiah reminds us that we no longer walk in darkness. For us, the ‘great light’ he speaks of is Jesus Christ.

In the second reading, Saint Paul urges the community to “be united in the same mind and in the same purpose” and “let there be no division among you.” In the gospel, Jesus invites the first Apostles: “Come after me, and I will make you fishers of men." Do you see yourself as a fisher of men/women? One of the reasons we have a large fishing net on the front wall of our church is to remind us of this call of Jesus. Our faith can’t remain merely private and self-serving. At Baptism and Confirmation, we have been empowered by the Holy Spirit to be other-centered and ready to share the treasures of our faith with those we encounter who need to experience an encounter with Jesus – that maybe only we can provide. Is God inviting you to bring His light, His peace and reconciliation to a difficult relationship or situation? Do you have someone in mind that could use your testimony about how you have obtained a new meaning and purpose for your life because of Jesus? Maybe someone you know needs hope; tell them where you derive your hope? Take God’s word with you. . . let it grow!

God bless you!

Fr. Bob
