Your Purpose during Lent

02-28-2021Pastor's CornerRev. Robert J. Deehan, V.F.

I was asked to share in this week’s bulletin the following questions that I posed in my homily last weekend, which were to help us in these 40 days of Lent to reflect on our purpose/mission in life – not unlike what Jesus did during His 40 days in the desert as He prepared for His public ministry. So, I invite you to take a few moments to ask yourself these questions.

  1. Is my life reflecting a commitment to love and serve God and neighbor? (The Two Great Commandments)
  2. Who or what is in charge of my life? Any addictions or attachments to address?
  3. Am I led by the Spirit as Jesus was? If not, what’s holding me back? Do I even think in these terms? Can I be open to looking at it this way – being “Spirit led?” (If not, come to the Lenten Evening of Reflection this Tuesday at 7 pm and learn how!)
  4. Am I willing to begin anew the project of becoming the kind of person God wants me to be? (“The best version of myself?” - Matthew Kelly)
  5. What am I going to do about it? Do I really want to do something to improve? Is the Sacrament of Reconciliation / Confession part of the process? Do I have a good excuse?

On the First Sunday of Lent, we heard Jesus say in the Gospel, “This is the time of fulfillment. The kingdom of God is at hand. Repent and believe in the Gospel.” In other words, NOW is the time! This Lent, may you come to understand what the “Good News” of the Gospel can do for you. With the grace of God and the guidance of the Holy Spirit, you can enjoy true freedom, inner healing, reconciliation with God, self and others, a deep joy from becoming all that God has made you to be, and the peace that only God can give. What more can anyone want?
