World Day of Prayer for Vocations / Mother's Day

05-12-2019Pastor's CornerFr. Bob

This Sunday is World Day of Prayer for Vocations. It's usually observed on "Good Shepherd Sunday" when the gospel refers to Jesus as the Good Shepherd. "Shepherd" can also refer to those who help lead the flock to Jesus, particularly, priests.

The purpose of this day is to publicly fulfill Jesus' instruction to, "Pray the Lord of the harvest to send laborers into his harvest" (Mt 9:38; Lk 10:2). There is a special need for priests to provide the sacramental life and pastoral care within our Church. For example, you may have heard that many of the parishes in our own Archdiocese are sharing priests with other parishes.

And still, there's also a need for religious sisters and brothers, as well as others who dedicate their lives in service to the Lord and His Church. And so, please pray - that young men and women hear and respond generously to the Lord's call to the priesthood, diaconate, religious life, societies of apostolic life or secular institutes. Invite the young people in your life to consider whether the Lord may be calling them. If so, the future of our Church depends upon their generous response!

Prayer / Blessing of Mothers on Mother's Day

As we also celebrate Mother’s Day today, I share with you the following prayer / blessing.

For our mothers, who have given us life and love, may we show them reverence and love. For all who have been like mothers to us, may they be blessed in a special way with God’s grace and peace.

For mothers who have lost a child through death, may their faith give them hope, and their family and friends support and console them.

For mothers who have died, may God bring them into the joy of His kingdom.

Loving God, as a mother gives life and nourishment to her children, so you watch over your Church. Bless all mothers, that they may be strengthened as Christian mothers. Let the example of their faith and love shine forth. Grant that we, their sons and daughters, relatives and friends may honor them always with a spirit of profound respect. Grant this through Christ our Lord. Amen.
